Berlinale Co-Production Market 2010

The seventh Berlinale Co-Production Market (February 14 - 16, 2010) brought the producers and directors of 36 selected film projects from 22 countries together with 450 potential co-production and financial partners.

For each of these projects, the Berlinale Co-Production Market’s team arranged numerous thirty-minute one-on-one meetings with interested potential partners. Over 1000 meetings in two days were scheduled based on the needs of the projects and the individual requests of the participants.

Meetings at the Berlinale Co-Production Market 2010

The project selection 2010 attracted great attention among potential co-producers and financiers. This year's selection included works by award-winning directors such as Marco Bechis (known for films like Garage Olimpo and Birdwatchers) whose new project Liquid Roads was presented by the Italian company Classic Srl, János Szász (Woyzeck, The Witman Boys) who was in Berlin to take meetings for his new project The Notebook together with producer Sandor Soeth from the German production company Intuit Pictures, or Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Return, The Banishment) whose new project Elena was presented by producer Alexander Rodnyansky's company Non-Stop Production from Russia.

Out of 354 submitted projects, 22 feature projects with budgets between one and seven million euros made it into the official selection. Three additional projects were chosen for the “Rotterdam-Berlinale Express”. They participated in both the CineMart Rotterdam and the Berlinale Co-Production Market.

Eleven projects by newcomers (selected from a record number of 267 entries) were presented in the “Talent Project Market” in cooperation with the Berlinale Talent Campus, and three of them were awarded a monetary prize at the "Talent Highlight Pitch": Kin by Asitha Ameresekere from the UK, Princesas Rojas by Laura Astorga from Costa Rica, and My Sweet Euthanasia by Tal Granit (co-director: Sharon Maymon) from Israel.

In addition to the pre-scheduled one-on-one meetings, the programme included Theme Talks on hot topics such as "Financial Packaging", "Green Production" and "3-D Production" where participants could find expert insight and exchange ideas. Exciting Case Studies on the Berlinale films Son of Babylon by Mohamed Al-Daradji (Panorama) and Submarino by Tomas Vinterberg (Competition) also generated high interest. Country Tables, where experts provided information on co-producing with their respective countries, as well as Speed Matchings rounded off the programme.

On the third day of the Berlinale Co-Production Market, ten new novels and bestsellers with outstanding potential for screen adaptation were presented at the fifth edition of "Breakfast & Books". Many producers used the opportunity to speak to the film rights representatives in a relaxed breakfast atmosphere directly after the pitch, to possibly secure the rights from the publishers and literary agents.
