Berlinale Co-Production Market

Case Study Heart of Fire, 2008
The Berlinale Co-Production Market kicked off in 2004. Since then there have been innumerable pre-arranged meetings and casual encounters between professionals. The outcome of these meetings are the many films and newly started collaborations. More than 80 projects from the previous editions are already in production or completed.

In 2008, eighteen finished films have been shown at internationally renowned festivals and have been screened in cinemas worldwide. Successes included competition entries at the Berlin, Cannes and Venice festivals (Heart of Fire by Luigi Falorni, Delta by Kornel Mundruczo and Milk by Semih Kaplanoglu) as well as an Academy Award nomination for Mongol by Sergei Bodrov. Audience successes included Flame & Citron by Ole Christian Madsen, which was Denmarks biggest box office success in many years - it was seen by 10 per cent of the Danish population; The Oxford Murders by Alex de la Iglesia, which took the top national box office rank in Spain, and Krabat, which had over a million viewers in Germany.
2009 started out with several previous projects from the Berlinale Co-Production Market screening at Sundance, among others Amreeka by Cherien Dabis, Zion and His Brother by Eran Merav and Carmo, Hit the Road by Murilo Pasta.

At the Berlin Film Festival 2009, a project from the first Talent Project Market in 2004, Soundless Wind Chime by Kit Hung screened in the Forum, meanwhile having become realised as a co-production between Hong Kong and Switzerland.

At the Cannes Film Festival 2009, two previous projects were successfully screened: the 2007 project Lost Persons Area by Caroline Strubbe won the SACD Screenplay Award, and Amreeka was awarded with the FIPRESCI Prize.

Small Crime by Christos Georgiou has been seen by many viewers in German cinemas, The Famous and the Dead by Esmir Filho was presented in Competition at the Locarno Film Festival, and Lebanon by Samuel Maoz was selected for Competition at Venice Film Festival.

Many more films are currently in production and post-production.
