Berlin 1945 – A Case Study (30 min)

Ambitious, stunning, moving – Berlin 1945 recounts the year 1945 in Berlin through the eyes of those who experienced it and as it has never been told before. Director Volker Heise and Editor Andrew Bird talk about the process and the challenges of creating this fast-paced 180-minute narrative that was assembled using solely archive footage.

Archival Research – An International Perspective (60 min)

Featuring clips from recent films such as Walchensee Forever (Janna Ji Wonders, Berlinale 2020), Beuys (Andreas Veiel), Into the Inferno (Werner Herzog) and rare footage from the archive stock of the German Federal Archives, renowned Canadian archive producer Elizabeth Klinck compares notes with German producers, researchers and archivist on the various approaches to archival research, producing and licensing.

Being part of the Bundesarchiv (German Federal Archives) the film department has the task to preserve and give access to the German film heritage. It is the central German film archive and holds films since the beginning of film production in 1895. Its core collections consist of films of the period between 1930 and 1945, newsreels after 1945 and films produced in the former GDR as well as films commissioned by state authorities. Furthermore the Bundesarchiv collects film-related materials in order to document the reception and production of the German film heritage.

Eye Filmmuseum is the only museum for film and the art of the moving image in the Netherlands. The Eye collection contains more than 50,000 Dutch and international films, and a wide variety of posters, photographs, film equipment, books and personal archives, among them the celebrated UNESCO World Heritage Collection of film pioneer Jean Desmet.
