Resilience in Distribution and Documentary Filmmaking Today

Access: Market Badge

Documentary filmmaking has revealed its power to change the hearts and minds of audiences globally and has grown significantly in popularity with mainstream audiences. While this may be our superpower, it also can attract attention that may not amplify but also stifle free speech, spaces where audience and filmmaker gather and affect both the career development of individuals but disrupt and shut down major distribution possibilities such as cinemas, broadcast television and film festivals. Given we are living in a time of the proliferation of opinions and unchecked facts, biassed and compromised news channels, how do documentary filmmakers and institutions negotiate shrinking space for deep-dives and outspoken work? How do filmmakers and institutions navigate highly politicised times to create consensus, community and finance/distribute critical work? What can we learn from other creative sectors and most importantly, how can we galvanise in the face of public and private censorship?
