Screenwriters and directors are the creative engine behind the films, TV programmes and online series that enrich our lives and shape our culture. They play a vital role in making stories that resonate globally. Yet their rights, and consequently their remuneration, fall far short of other parties in the production chain.

In some regions, directors and screenwriters are not even recognized as authors of their works, leaving them without the basic legal protection they deserve. In only a few countries in Europe and Latin America do they enjoy the basic right to be remunerated fairly for the use of their works. Too often, audiovisual creators live a fragile, unsustainable professional life, limited in their negotiating power and therefore dependent on one-off lump sum payments.

This situation represents a fundamental lack of fairness in the legal framework of the audiovisual industry. This anomaly has been around long before the age of streaming and of AI, but the rise of digital developments has exacerbated the situation. This new landscape has opened new avenues for distribution of works. But it has also made it increasingly difficult to receive fair compensation for the use of their works.

This roundtable will bring together international AV authors and experts to share their views on this global challenge.

The panel will be followed by a 30-minutes networking cocktail.
