Two years into the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the film sector has been significantly impacted. However, the Ukrainian film industry has shown resilience by maintaining its level of professionalism and activity. It continues to develop film projects, sustain distribution, and offer unique services and expertise.
Over the past two years, the Ukrainian film industry has been under international scrutiny due to the ongoing Russian invasion. The first year saw a substantial impact, with film production coming to a halt and the festival and distribution scene experiencing numerous losses, particularly in occupied territories. Despite these challenges, the Ukrainian film sector has exhibited adaptability and flexibility in the face of dire circumstances. Film production, cinemas, and festivals gradually resumed operations in major cities, however with numerous limitations, especially during missile attacks.
The upcoming panel will delve into the current state of film financing, exploring the role of the European film community in it. The discussion will also touch upon the situation with film distributors and exhibitors, coproduction opportunities, and insights into operating during wartime conditions. Documentary film production is experiencing rapid growth both nationally and internationally, presenting opportunities for collaboration.
Organised by the National Filmmakers Union of Ukraine in collaboration with the Ukrainian Institute and the European film market, the panel aims to shed light on the challenges and opportunities within the Ukrainian film industry during this turbulent period.
